What is Misty Wings Productions?
MWP is an amateur group that creates fan media of various anime and manga. Specifically, MWP creates fandubs, radio plays, and AMVs.
What is a fandub?
First off, a fandub is not a fansub. You've seen professional dubs right? We do the same thing. We dub over the Japanese voices in English with our own voices, thus producing a fan dub. Unlike fansubs, we dub a new track over the original sound.
What is a radio play?
It's an audio drama of a story, usually manga. There are no visuals, only voices, music, and sounds effects, so it's like the audio dramas you hear on the radio.
What is an AMV?
AMV stands for anime music video. It's a short music video created with various clips from one or more anime series.
Why don't you dub entire episodes?
Dubbing takes a lot of time. More time than subbing. A lot more time. So in general we only choose a few favorite scenes to dub instead of entire episodes. Sometimes we do whole episodes, but it's rare.
So, who is 'we' anyway?
Well technically, Misty Wings Productions is just me (topleka). I write the scripts, and do all the casting and mixing. But I obviously can't voice every character in the world, so that's where the 'we' comes in. Anyone who has given their voice to a MWP project is part of MWP. Also, MWP does a lot of joint projects with other people, mainly because I hate mixing. >.> Check out our affiliates at the bottom of the page.
How exactly do you fandub something?
That's a question that could take a lot more time and space to answer than I have, so I'll be brief. Basically I take a clip of anime that I want to dub, and I remove all the sound. Then I remix the entire track. That includes the background music, sound effects, and of course, the voices. You cannot just rip the vocals from the track and overlay new voices (it sounds terrible). Everything has to be mixed again. So the basic steps are to find a cast (either through open auditions, or asking people), send out the script, and mix together the lines, sound effects, and music.
Okay, so what programs do you use?
I personally use Audacity for recording my own lines as well as mixing. It's free, flexible, and darn it, it's free. I know a lot of people prefer to use Goldwave. It's really up to you. For laying the audio track over the original clip, I use Virtual Dub.
But where do I get the stuff to dub things?
Well, I get my raws primarily from Saiyaman, and l33t-raws. I find most of the OSTs for stuff at Box Torrents, and sound effects can be found at Sound Dogs. Of course, there are many more places to find stuff, but these are my primary resources.
Can I be a part of a project?
It depends. If you have any skills with mixing stuff or encoding video, I'd certainly like your help. Contact me (AIM: toplekaness, MSN: topleka@hotmail.com, email: mistywings@topleka.net), and we'll talk. If you want to add your voice to a project, please wait for auditions to open up. I get too many emails saying "My voice is this high and I want to voice for you and I love such-and-such an anime." I hold auditions on a semi-regular basis. So please be patient and wait for them instead of asking me to just blindly cast you.
When will [insert project name] be done?
As soon as I can finish it. But hey, stuff like this takes time. Especially now that I'm in college. I'll finish as soon as I can, but I like to make sure everything is as high a quality as possible, so I might be slow in finishing projects. Don't worry though, I really do finish my projects.
You should do [insert name here]!
I have so many ideas and so little time, but I'm always interested to learn about new manga and anime. So contact me (AIM: toplekaness, MSN: topleka@hotmail.com, email: mistywings@topleka.net) with your ideas and I'll definitely consider them.
